Where can I obtain information about WiFi?
Report to the harbour master. He will give you the necessary documentation and all the information about how to connect to the Internet on your boat of in your caravan. This information contains the terms of use, your IP address and information about your PC’s settings.
Modern PCs and laptops often have a built-in wireless LAN card. If this
isn’t the case you must purchase a wireless LAN card. You can purchase a
flat card that you insert into the front or side of your laptop. There
are also wireless LAN USB sticks that you can insert into the USB port
of your laptop or PC. Such cards and USB stick include an installation
CD. Once you have installed the software, you only have to adjust the
settings then you can surf.
Please note that every type of wireless LAN card has its own specific
manner of logging into the wireless system. Connecting to the Internet
can vary greatly from PC to PC or from laptop to laptop. The strength of
the signal will also differ depending on the type of WiFi card or USB
stick. When uploading - 80 it’s best to have an outdoor aerial or to
extend your USB WiFi stick with a USB cable so that you are near a
window. Reception is strongly influenced by climatic circumstances
(mist, fog), radio interference or trees close by that obstruct the path
between your PC and the mast. The ideal situation is visual contact
with the mast.
Once your PC or laptop is configured and all software and hardware are
installed, you are almost there. All you have to do is install the
network access key.
Go to the harbour master’s office for this. He will award you an IP
address. Click on 'wireless Internet connections' then on 'properties’
and click on 'Internet protocol (TCP/IP)'. Under Internet protocol
(TCP/IP) choose 'properties' once again.
Click on manual settings then enter the details that you received from
the harbour master. Close the window, allow everything to be processed
then close all the related windows. Now search for a network via your
WiFi card or USB stick software. Log into the network and you are set.
